Mardi Gras, my first night

When I arrived in my room my roommate shared her bread with me so that I could make a sandwich. I needed that, because otherwise I would've probably passed out after the weird rhythm and lack of food I'd had. After devouring half of the sandwich I took a shower and went to lay in someone's bed, which I thought was mine. I woke up 4 hours later to see my room full of people getting ready for a party and I had no idea what was going on at that point. I was confused and tired and hungry and then they asked me if I wanted to join them to 'Mardi Gras'... I, of course, had never heard of something like that, but it was something I could not miss, the biggest LGBT-party ever, and the 40est anniversary for that matter. Like a gay pride parade, but bigger and festivities lasting the entire week and Cher playing as the main attraction (which I heard of the day later, unfortunately). There was no way I could say no to this invitation and I would probably have regretted it if I hadn't gone with my roommates. This was the first choice I had to make: lay in my bed and sleep out my jetlag, or be social and get to know some of the people that were going to be closest to me in the next couple of weeks.. easy. First, we glittered-up and we did our hair and I borrowed some clothes, then we followed a roommate to a nearby hostel where she knew some more people who would join our crew, and off we went.

The street was filled with glitters: glittery people, glittery clothing, it was unlike anything I'd ever seen. This party also seemed like an excuse for most girls to walk the streets half naked, which is then fine because most guys at a gay parade are gay anyways, so was the guy I was going with, the rest were all girls. On the street we met some Aussies, two men, who were spontaneously coming along with our group. They stayed with us the entire night and they were absolutely out of their mind, which was fantastic. One of the girls I'd met -Nina- asked me where I was from, she was from England and she was wondering how I'd sounded so English if I wasn't from England as well. I told her how big a compliment that was to me, because that was my biggest goal. When I later on the night met a boy called Shaun, also from England, and when he asked me if I was from England, my night couldn't get any better.

Also, I have been writing this particular blog-story for two weeks, because that is how long I've been here, and this was my first night, so more stories to come.

Couldn't find the original from Paul Simon. But it sounds almost the same. Enjoy!

It seems to me you're having a great time Down Under. You on the other side of the world, burning sun, beautiful people, sightseeing, enjoying live......we here, wondering why it's freezing cold outside. It feels like minus 15 degrees Celsius. We are proud to have you there and we hope you'll find the things you're looking for, meanwhile nevertheless we do miss our girl, our sister our girlfriend. We miss your early morning breakfast conversations, we miss our daily huggs, the quarrels and so much more like your pretty sight. But we're trying to arrange some sort of rendezvous. You know what I mean. Karlijn you know we all want you to enjoy your stay, Ruben, mam, Yoram and me.…

I love to travel anywhere and besides some good company, my camera is the only thing I need by my side. All the photos posted on this site will be selfmade. Promise. All the words will also be my own, unless they're Disney-quotes.

If there are mistakes in my English, please be a grammar-nazi. Some of my teachers will probably be reading this. Also, if you have tips or feedback, I'd love to hear it. Cheers x
